Learn how to install applications on both Android and iOS devices with our step-by-step tutorials
When installing APK files from outside the Play Store, always verify the source and check app permissions carefully. Consider using antivirus software to scan downloaded files for extra security.
Navigate to Settings > Security (or Apps & notifications on newer Android versions). Locate and enable "Unknown Sources" to permit installations from sources other than the Play Store. Some devices may require you to enable this per-app through the installation prompt.
Acquire the APK file from a reputable source. Use your preferred browser or a dedicated download manager. For large files, ensure you have a stable Wi-Fi connection to avoid corrupted downloads.
Open your file manager application (Google Files, Solid Explorer, etc.) and navigate to your "Downloads" directory. If you specified a different location during download, check there instead. Some browsers create their own download folders.
Tap the APK file to initiate installation. Carefully review the permissions requested by the application. If anything seems suspicious for the app's functionality, reconsider installation. Tap "Install" to proceed or "Cancel" to abort.
After successful installation, you can immediately open the app or find it later in your app drawer. For future updates, you may need to manually download newer APK versions unless the app includes its own update mechanism.
Apple's strict security policies mean most users can only install apps from the official App Store. Alternative methods may require temporary compromises to system security or are intended for developers only.
Open the App Store application. Use search to find your desired app or browse categories. Tap "Get" (for free apps) or the price button (for paid apps). Authenticate with Face ID, Touch ID, or your Apple ID password. Wait for download and installation to complete.
For organization-distributed apps: Open the provisioning link in Safari. When prompted, select "Install". After installation but before first launch, navigate to Settings > General > VPN & Device Management to trust the enterprise developer certificate.
Install Apple's TestFlight from the App Store. Accept beta invitations via email or invitation links. TestFlight allows installation of pre-release versions of apps for testing purposes, with expiration dates typically 90 days from installation.
For registered Apple Developers: Connect your device to a Mac running Xcode. Enable Developer Mode in Settings. Build and run apps directly from Xcode onto your device. This requires an active Apple Developer account ($99/year).
